A Workshop on the Usefullness of Dance Dramaturgy in Choreographic Practices 10-12 maj
In the field of dance, dramaturgy is still a relatively new discipline and a new profession, which is therefore still viewed with curiosity and suspicion. All too often one wonders what dramaturgy actually is. But instead of losing ourselves in endless attempts at definition, we will – in this intense theory-practical Workshop – concentrate more on what dramaturgy can actually do, both for choreographers and for dance as such.
We will take a closer look into various dramaturgical practices. Such as focussing on methods that can help to concretize and contextualize artistic ideas, for example for project proposals or program texts, but also for collaboration within the artistic team. However, we will also examine the content and dynamics of some dance pieces as case studies and thus fathom the significance of dramaturgy as a choreographic tool in dance.
This workshop is open for those who did not have the opportunity to join in last November as well as for participants of last year’s introductory workshop. Together we will refresh our knowledge and deepen it in different exercises and case studies.
Thomas Schaupp is a free-lancing dance dramaturg based in Berlin. He is collaborating with several international choreographers, currently with Anne-Mareike Hess, Janne-Camilla Lyster, Camille Mutel and Stian Danielsen. As a mentor and advisor for young choreographers he collaborates with institutions such as Dansearena Nord in Hammerfest and KHIO in Oslo. Thomas is a guest teacher at the Inter-University Centre for Dance in Berlin and facilitates workshops on dance-dramaturgy in choreographic centres across Europe. In collaboration with Ibsen International and Goethe Institut Beijing he also co-curates a Cultural Exchange Program on Dance Dramaturgy in China.
