Touching Sound Workshop on contact improvisation and improvised music with David Leahy

Content In this workshop we will explore the ground between contact improvisation and improvised music and look at how a performer’s body can be used to negotiate physical and sonic space. David will share insights gained from over twenty years of working as an improviser within both dance and music, with a specific focus on contact improvisation and free improvised music. We will look at the specific needs of both dancers and musicians within an improvised space, addressing qualities of listening, motivation and intentionality related to both the use of sound and the body. David’s overall aim will be to offer a range of approaches that draw on skills and perspectives from the two disciplines, so as to make us all stronger communicators and performers within the risky collaborative space of improvisation, regardless of our starting points.

Teacher bio Originally from New Zealand, David has spent the last 18 years living and working in the UK, deepening a specialism spanning many forms of collaborative practice between improvised music and dance. Primarily a double bass player and a contact improviser, David’s experience across these two disciplines spreads across performance, practice, teaching and research. This is now feeding into a practice-based research PhD at the University of Westminster investigating aspects of spatialization (performers and audience in motion) within an improvised music performance.

David’s long-standing collaborative relationships include various groups and independent performance makers working throughout the performing arts, including the London Improvisers Orchestra, Wuppertal Improvisers Orchestra, and many other improvisers on the European free improvised music scene. David has also worked with Fevered Sleep (theatre), Theo Klinkard, Tina Krasevec (Slap) and Hagit Yakira (dance).

David works as a dance accompanist at Trinity Laban and for contact improvisation classes. He is a regular facilitator of both the danced Underscore practice, devised by Nancy Stark Smith, and the Music-based Underscore, his own adaptation of this practice.
